Life Coaching London – Your Questions Answered
What is Coaching?
Coaching is a one-to-one interactive relationship that helps you identify and accomplish personal and professional goals faster than you could on your own. Effective coaching delivers sustainable achievement, helping you to achieve your true potential.
Coaching is non-directive - the coach does not advise, direct, instruct or tell because he/she does not know the answer that is correct for YOU. Instead, a coach is trained to ask skilful questions that identify what you truly want in any situation. It is an advantage for the coach not to be too close to your situation - bringing the clarity of an open mind is often one of the most valuable services provided.
Until recently, coaching was probably done informally by friends or the extended family network. Having a chat with a relation or a good pal could let you mull over problems you didn't want to discuss with 'just anybody'. Nowadays families may be too distant geographically for such a trusting relationship to develop. Friends are still an option, but they may be involved in the issue, competitors in some sense or even prone to enjoy a good gossip. If you need a wise confidante whose confidentiality can be relied upon, a qualified coach is the answer.
How does coaching differ from similar (sounding) disciplines?
Counselling
The prime difference between coaching and counselling, or therapy, is that in counselling or therapy the person is seen as broken, bruised and in need of healing. In coaching, people are viewed as alive, resourceful and whole. Coaches don't fix broken people, we empower healthy people to perform at a higher level and realise their full potential.
Consulting
Consulting is about being viewed as the expert who has all the right answers, usually in a business setting. Consultants give direct answers to specific questions. This is not coaching - being a coach is about being a partner and ASKING the right questions.
Mentoring
Mentoring is often concerned with longer-term career issues, and a mentor will often have experience in the field under discussion.
